Vote 756

In September of 2007, Marc won the auction to own the baseball that Barry Bonds hit for his “record-breaking” 756th home run. It wasn’t exactly cheap: Marc forked over $752, 467 for it—a lot of money, especially considering that right after revealing himself as the new owner of the ball, Marc turned around and gave it back, in a sense, to the public.
The website vote756.com was launched to poll people on what should be done with the controversial artifact. There were three options: 1. Bestow the ball to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown as is. 2. Brand the ball with an asterisk and then donate it to Cooperstown. 3. Blast the ball into space.
Over 10 million votes were cast, and the winner, with 47%, was Brand It. The Hall of Fame said they were thrilled to be receiving the ball; Bonds called Marc an idiot. On January 10, 2008, in Brooklyn, NY, the ball was laser-branded with an asterisk.
