Drag Racing

Piercing the air by a unified scream of pure horse power, sleek, needle-like cars accelerate side-by-side down a 1,320-foot strip vying for position at speeds that exceed those of a fighter jet. Less than five seconds later, the race is over. Engines shut down and parachutes strain to bring the cars to a stop after hitting more than 320 mph…that’s drag racing. And Gary Gardella is no stranger to the sport, winning just about everything he enters with his Ecko sponsored Chevy Cobalt. Drag racing began due to post-World War II America’s boom in automotive pride. A new breed of enthusiast customized cars to make them faster, then raced against fellow hot-rodders on back roads or deserted streets. Drag racing still remains the rough, rugged and raw side of motor sports and shows no sign of slowing down.
